NFL News of October 21, 2003

More than 10 years after Denver invested a first-round pick in him, Tommy Maddox finally is contributing to the Broncos at quarterback.

Only it is not in the way anyone, former Broncos coach Dan Reeves included, ever imagined.

Maddox is one of the primary individuals responsible for helping resuscitate the once-strangled NFL career of Danny Kanell, Denver’s new starting quarterback.

As recently as two weeks ago, Kanell thanked Maddox for it.

“Guys like Tommy, Kurt Warner, Jeff Garcia – guys who have kind of taken their various ways – those are the guys I looked at and said, ‘Hey, if they can do it, I can, too.”‘

This is Kanell’s big-league chance, what he has waited for since the Atlanta Falcons exiled him from the NFL after the 2000 season.

Kanell started the next two games for the Broncos, losing both. He remained with Denver through the 2004 season, but did not see action as a back-up to Jake Plummer.
