NFL news of October 23, 2002

As good as their quarterback was on Sunday, the Atlanta Falcons face one this weekend who may be equally dangerous.

Aaron Brooks has the New Orleans Saints atop the NFC South heading into Sunday’s game against their division rivals in the Louisiana Superdome.

Though not as spectacular as his counterpart, cousin and fellow Newport News, Va., native Michael Vick, the bottom line is that the Saints (6-1) are one of only three NFL teams with one loss. If not for an inexplicable loss to bottom-feeding Detroit last month, the Saints would be unbeaten.

…Brooks, in his second full season as a starter, is the NFL’s eighth-rated passer (90.8) and is third in the NFC behind future Hall of Famer Brett Favre (101.2) and Vick (93.8).

The Falcons defeated the Saints 37-35 on a last second field goal from Jay Feely. The Falcons finished 9-6-1 and took the last spot in the NFC playoffs. The Saints finished the season 9-7 and out of the playoffs.
