NFL news of September 24, 2002

Minnesota Vikings quarterback Daunte Culpepper has thrown a league-high six interceptions, and his passer rating of 71.1 is among the worst in the NFL. He has lost four fumbles, and he lost his cool Sunday as the Vikings lost to the Carolina Panthers. But his job security is air tight; he seems to have the support of the entire franchise.

“Daunte is a great quarterback, and he’s just having a little trouble with his rhythm. He’s working hard and he practices hard,” team owner Red McCombs said. “I think he’s one of the better quarterbacks in the league, and I have total confidence in him.”

Everyone—from McCombs to offensive coordinator Scott Linehan to coach Mike Tice to his teammates—expects the proud and persistent Culpepper to bounce back, despite his disastrous start.

— Sean Jensen, St. Paul Pioneer Press “Culpepper’s job is stable in Minnesota.”
